Critique my mix: Nightwish - Over the Hills and Far Away (cover)

MessageAuthor

I think this one is about done but something seems a bit off but realistically it's probably fine. But bust my balls anyway. Thanks.

Ok, I know the Nightwish version very well. Did you know the Nightwish version is actually a cover? Overall this is a really kickass cover! It's well performed, well mixed, and the extra embellishments are great. Critiques: I think the storm fx at the beginning should be lowered out faster. Rhythm guitars have a slight lack of balls and a slight lack in clarity. The vocal harmonies are missing. The vox are not quite aggressive or epic enough either - maybe some distortion and delay/verb would help.

Thanks for the insight, guys. I'll see how many things the clients will be comfortable changing. I agree that the guitars probably lack a bit of balls. Balancing orchestra sounds and guitars is such a delicate balancing act. I backed off the quieter sections by 1db but maybe that's too small to notice. Setting the bus compressor to this song was weird because the kick would eat it up even with the HPF. Maybe it's the attack time that's too fast. I dunno. It's all a learning process.
