Stupid midi question...

MessageAuthor

Hello...I'm new to Reaper and really love the look of it so far! One stupid question though: I'm having problems assigning different midi channels to different VST instruments. I open a new track (TRACK 1) with a VST (Massive) loaded into the FX parameters. I then create a new track (TRACK 2) with a different VST (a 303 sim) loaded into it's FX parameters. However...when I select either track and try and play the VST assigned to it on my midi keyboard, the midi signal plays the other VST on the other track (so both Massive and the 303 sim play at the same time). I've tried changing the midi inputs on the dropdown boxes for each one but haven't had any joy figuring out what I'm doing wrong! e.g. If I try the following... TRACK 1 MIDI input > Map input to channel > channel 1 TRACK 2 MIDI input > Map input to channel > channel 2 ...both VSTs play at the same time! Incidentally, I've got 'In USB Midi 1x1' set to all channels for both tracks. If I change to anything other than this or channel 1 (e.g. if I change to channel 2) I get no midi signal. Any pointers would be appreciated!!

first - it seems you're talking about your hardware KB, right ? if so, the only possible both tracks are playing (I can think of), is that both armed for recording.

Hello monkey man and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information. Yep, KB = keyboard You can have both tracks Armed for Recording (for example, track 1 listening for MIDI on channel 01, and track 2 listening for MIDI on channel 02) Then you need to get your MIDI keyboard (which one is it?) to send out MIDI on channel 01 or channel 02. If you can split the keyboard, then one range of notes can send MIDI on channel 01 and the other range send notes on channel 02.
